3D Laser Scan Standards

Field capture requirements for resolution, registration accuracy, overlap, and coverage on every laser scan and Matterport project.

Last updated: Jun 2026

1. Purpose & Scope

These standards define the minimum requirements for all reality-capture fieldwork performed for ScanLogiq, including terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), SLAM/mobile capture, and Matterport tours. They ensure that raw data delivered to the registration and modeling teams is complete, accurate, and repeatable regardless of who performs the capture.

2. Equipment & Calibration

  • Only survey-grade scanners with a manufacturer calibration current within 12 months may be used.
  • Verify calibration certificate and battery health before mobilization.
  • Matterport captures use Pro2/Pro3 or an approved LiDAR-equipped device; phone-only capture is not acceptable for BIM deliverables.
  • Record scanner make, model, serial number, and firmware version in the project field log.

3. Resolution & Density by Target LOD

Set on-site scan resolution to match the contracted deliverable. Point spacing is measured at 10 m from the scanner.

Target deliverablePoint spacing @ 10mTypical quality setting
Existing conditions / LOD 200≤ 6 mm1/4 resolution, 3x quality
Scan to BIM / LOD 300≤ 3 mm1/2 resolution, 3x quality
MEP-dense / LOD 350≤ 2 mm1/2 resolution, 4x quality
Heritage / high detail≤ 1 mmFull resolution, 4x quality

4. Overlap & Registration Targets

  • Maintain a minimum 40% overlap between adjacent scan positions.
  • Cloud-to-cloud registration error must be ≤ 6 mm; flag any setup exceeding this for re-scan.
  • Use checkerboard or sphere targets in low-feature areas (long corridors, empty warehouses).
  • Capture at least three shared targets or overlap features between connected areas.

5. Coverage Requirements

  • Scan all in-scope rooms, corridors, stairwells, and mechanical spaces with line-of-sight to all bounding surfaces.
  • Capture floor-to-deck where ceilings are in scope; note any concealed or inaccessible areas.
  • Include enough exterior setups to tie floors together vertically via stair and elevator cores.
  • Photograph any occluded or ambiguous conditions for the modeling team.

If site conditions prevent meeting any standard (access, occupancy, safety), document the deviation on the field log and notify the project coordinator before demobilizing.
